Root Canal Treatment

Nerves and tissue inside a tooth can become infected as a result of tooth decay, damage to the tooth, failing crowns, dislodged fillings or past dental procedures.

Particularly for back teeth, signs that you may have an infected nerve can include:

• Sensitivity
• Toothache or acute tooth pain
• Pain when biting
• Swelling around the gums
• Tooth darkening

When an infected root nerve is left untreated, it can cause significant discomfort and can potentially lead to an abscess or a spread of the infection to the jaw and mouth.

In order to establish the extent of an infection, we often first take X-rays and dental imagery to plan your treatment.

Your dentist will then numb the area around the tooth to be treated. Damaged and decayed parts of the tooth can then be removed to allow access to the tooth root canals.

The infected tissue is removed from within the tooth, and the root canals, which are then thoroughly cleaned, are disinfected before being sealed.

Following a root canal treatment, a filling or dental crown is commonly used to restore and strengthen your tooth.
