Mouth Cancer Screening

Signs of mouth cancer can include tumours, growths and abnormalities that develop in and around the mouth.

During screening, we examine your tongue, lips and gums, as well as your face, neck and throat.

Symptoms that you should not ignore include:

• Growths or lumps.
• Bleeding ulcers that do not heal.
• Red or white patches on the inside of the mouth.
• Persistent pain when swallowing.

While these symptoms are not necessarily signs of mouth cancer, you should always seek a professional medical opinion as soon as possible.

Your dentist will inform you if they detect any abnormalities. And if you have any concerns about mouth cancer or general oral health issues, ask your dentist for advice straight away.

Just as with other forms of cancer, the risks of oral cancer can potentially be reduced by cutting down or stopping smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, taking regular exercise and eating a balanced diet.
